Choe Je-woo founded Donghak in 19th-century Joseon when the country was shaken by corrupt officials and Western invasions.
In a strict class society, he taught 'Man is Heaven' (Innaechon). He freed his household slaves, adopting one as a daughter and marrying the other to his son, breaking class chains before his execution in 1864.
