Silence

"Watch your words and do not speak mindlessly. A single moment of looking inward in quiet silence is more valuable than a thousand words followed by no practice."

— Seosan Daesa

Today's Question

Do you perceive the 'silence' in a conversation as an awkward disconnect, or as a gateway to receive the other person's world?

The Zen master who established the way of silence instead of swords in war

Seosan Daesa was a high monk of Joseon who spent his life meditating in mountain temples. He strongly warned against the lightness of words and the waste of thoughts associated with them.

When the Imjin War broke out in 1592, he gathered monk volunteers to defend the country at age 73. Even amidst bloody battles, he maintained the silent peace of his mind and returned to the quiet mountains after victory.
