"Love consists in this, that two solitudes protect and border and salute each other."
Today's Question
To you, what does the 'most comfortable togetherness' look like? Is it sharing every detail, or focusing on your own tasks in silence without feeling awkward?
Why are we Lonely even Among Many People?
Rainer Maria Rilke was a poet who wandered his whole life, praising solitude. He believed that true love is not about eliminating each other's solitude by bonding, but rather about guarding and respecting each other's boundaries.
Rilke pursued 'solitude together'—being with a friend or lover without disturbing each other's work. He saw that a relationship could last forever only when a distance was maintained where they could salute each other without invading each other's borders.
