Bergson was the most influential philosopher of the early 20th century. He believed that 'calculated and measured time' defined by physics fails to capture the true time of life.
In 1922, Bergson met Einstein in Paris and engaged in a fierce debate about time. Einstein asserted that 'there is no philosopher's time, only physical time.' Bergson countered that the quality of time we experience—such as the difference between a minute of sorrow and a minute of joy—is true time, which he called 'duration' (durée).
