Nietzsche suffered from chronic headaches and declining vision, eventually resigning from his professorship to write books alone in a quiet room in the Swiss Alps. He believed that merging into the crowd makes humans lose their unique mental depth.
In a letter to a friend, he wrote, 'My solitude is a sanctuary that heals me, a forge where I sharpen the blade of my thoughts away from the public gaze.' To him, solitude was a necessary womb to overcome limits and become the Ubermensch.
