Epicurus is often misunderstood as a 'hedonist' pursuing sensory pleasures, but in reality, his life was extremely simple. He believed that complex social ambitions and luxurious desires were the primary sources of mental anxiety.
The only food placed on the dining table of the community 'The Garden,' where he lived with his disciples, was bread, water, and occasionally a bit of cheese. He valued 'Ataraxia' (undisturbed tranquility) far more than the fleeting pleasure of eating luxurious dishes.
