A Book of Consolation Written While Awaiting Execution
Boethius was a Roman aristocrat and philosopher who, after the fall of the Western Roman Empire, served as consul and chief administrator under the Ostrogothic king Theodoric. He dreamed of translating all the works of Plato and Aristotle into Latin.
At the height of his power he was suddenly imprisoned on charges of treason, and while awaiting execution he wrote The Consolation of Philosophy. In it, Lady Philosophy visits him and reminds him that Fortune's nature is to turn her wheel, so one cannot expect only the climb. He was executed around 524.
