Strong at the Broken Places

"The world breaks every one and afterward many are strong at the broken places."

— Ernest Hemingway

Today's Question

What kind of moment makes you feel, 'I've become sturdier than before'?

Do Broken Bones Really Heal Stronger?

Ernest Hemingway served as an ambulance driver in World War I and later covered the Spanish Civil War and World War II as a reporter. In spare, clean prose he captured the wounds of the 'Lost Generation' shaped by war and loss.

In 1918, at eighteen, he was badly wounded by a mortar shell on the Italian front, his legs full of shrapnel, and received the Italian Silver Medal of Military Valor. In 1954 he survived two plane crashes in Africa on consecutive days and got to read his own obituaries in the newspapers.
