Daniel Kahneman was a psychologist who revealed how systematically human judgment goes wrong, and he won the 2002 Nobel Prize in Economics without ever taking an economics course. He saw us not as rational calculators but as beings easily swayed by whatever is in front of us.
He grew up as a Jewish child in Nazi-occupied Paris. At about seven, walking home after curfew, he ran into an SS soldier—who hugged him, showed him a photo of his son, and gave him money. Kahneman recalled learning from this that people are endlessly complicated and interesting.
