The man who told Alexander the Great, 'Stand out of my sunlight'
Exiled from his hometown of Sinope over defacing the currency, Diogenes lived in Athens in a large storage jar. He rejected social labels like wealth, honor, and origin, embodying the Cynic life of living according to nature.
When Alexander the Great visited and offered him anything he wished, Diogenes replied, 'Stand a little out of my sunlight.' Alexander is said to have remarked, 'If I were not Alexander, I would wish to be Diogenes.'
