A pilot crashed in the desert and learned the beauty of subtraction
Before he wrote The Little Prince, Saint-Exupéry was an airmail pilot flying routes across the Sahara and the Andes. For him, an airplane was not romance but a machine on which life and death depended, and a simple design stripped of excess meant survival.
In 1935 he crash-landed in the Libyan desert with his mechanic and wandered for four days with almost no water before being rescued by a Bedouin. The experience flowed into Wind, Sand and Stars and the desert scenes of The Little Prince.
