The Present

"The only thing a person can lose is the present moment. The past is gone and the future has not yet come, so the only time we truly possess is always 'now.'"

— Marcus Aurelius

Today's Question

When do you feel most vividly 'fully present in this moment' — when your body is moving, or when your thoughts fall silent?

Why an emperor interrogated himself every single night

Marcus Aurelius ruled the entire Roman Empire, yet in his war tent he wrote private letters to himself in Greek, not Latin. This personal record, never meant for publication, became the 'Meditations.'

Even as plague and endless border wars shook the empire, he reviewed each day every night, asking himself how fully present he had been. To him, regretting the past or worrying about the future wasted the only power he actually had: his judgment in the present.
